Austin Texas H Pal

I’m Kelly, a 26 year old graduate student most of the way through a PhD program in Neuroscience. I was diagnosed with HSV in August 2009, after asking for the type-specific blood tests to be included in my STI screening. In the days after my diagnosis, I also realized that I had had a misdiagnosed outbreak in the back of my throat from oral sex when I was 16. Like 90% of people who have genital herpes, I was unaware for the good part of a decade that I have it.

I’m sure I’m not as open as some people when it comes to disclosure, but all of my closest friends know that I have herpes, and it’s been easy for me to disclose to potential partners so far. I don’t limit myself to trying to meet and date only HSV-positive people, but it does make it easier knowing that you don’t have to worry about transmission in those cases. I’m on many of the H dating sites, and have already met and had a short-lived romance with a man I met on one. Dating sucks in general, and I’d love to try to help out other single people who are dating with herpes.

I want to be an H-pal so that I can help people who are uncomfortable or unhappy with their diagnosis by being a positive role model. I’ve fully embraced the fact that I have HSV – to the point that I now have a tattoo of the viral structure on my lower back!
