Ocular Herpes, Eye Herpes OR Herpes Eye Infections

Ocular herpes, meaning HSV infection of the eye, is almost always caused by HSV-1 in adults and children. In newborn babies, it can be caused by HSV-2 acquired from the mother during birth. Ocular herpes usually occurs when latent HSV-1 from an earlier infection in the facial area reactivates and travels to the eye instead of the mouth or lips, but the eye can also be the site of a first infection. About 5% of people with an oral HSV-1 infection eventually develop ocular herpes.

Symptoms sometimes begin with blisters or cold sores on the eyelid and the itchy, watery sort of “pink eye” associated with conjunctivitis. Later symptoms typically include pain and sensitivity to light. Most cases will resolve on their own in two or three weeks, but when left untreated, ocular herpes can lead to painful lesions on the cornea.

More than 25% of people with ocular herpes experience recurrences. Repeated recurrences can result in corneal scarring, overgrowth of new blood vessels in the eye, and eventual blindness, a variety of effective topical and systemic treatments are available, including trifluridine, acyclovir, and vidarabine.

Whether or not vision is at risk depends on where in the eye the infection occurs, how often it recurs, and how quickly treatment is started.

If you have ocular herpes I would absolutely LOVE it if you would send me your story so that I can post it on the web. I'd like to include it so that other people with ocular herpes will not feel so alone over it. Good or bad don't hesitate to send me your story, how you were diagnosed, what you are doing today to treat your eye herpes, and so forth and so on. Thanks!

Happy Belated Valentine's Day Everybody. I want to personally thank Heather for being bold enough to share her story about what it's like to have eye herpes also known as ocular herpes. Thanks Heather!!

The subject of ocular herpes comes up so much that I thought it would be nice to borrow a short piece straight from the Managing Herpes book. If you don't already have this book in your arsenal of herpes information, I highly recommend that you order it sooner rather than waiting until later.
