Apples and Oranges, YUM!
Indy Gathering and Atlanta Event Comparison for those trying to decide
which national event to attend!
Actually, I don't think of
them as different groups. You'll see so many of the same familiar
faces at both events (as well as Nashville, Madeira, etc) because so
many of the local groupies know each other and attend each other's
national events. And Atlanta does, no doubt, put on a great event.
But it's like comparing apples and oranges. It just depends on what
you prefer.
Frankly, I go to both because
I would hate to have to choose between the two. For instance,
Atlanta is in a huge hotel within easy reach of all that a big city
can offer. But the "group" is scattered around and mixed with other
hotel guests except during specific functions. At Indy, everybody
you see in the lobby, the elevator, the parking lot, the pool, in
the halls.... everywhere you look .... is with the "group". That's
what I meant about summer camp. And if you're alone and feeling like
talking to somebody, you just plunk your butt down in a chair in the
lobby, and within a few minutes somebody else will do likewise, and
then another, and soon you'll find yourself with new "groupie"
friends.
It's not that easy to connect
in Atlanta because everyone is spread out and not everyone wears
their wrist band all the time. Doesn't mean all the groupies aren't
just as friendly, they're just not as easy to find during the "off"
hours. Plus, an occasional embarrassing moment can happen when a
"groupie" mistakes another hotel guest as a "group member" (it can
also be hilarious lol!). And conversations in the
lobby/restaurant/bar areas of the Westin are necessarily a bit more
guarded because of the close proximity of "group"/non-group patrons.
But Indy is all about total
relaxation in that regard ;-) Another thing, Indy holds a
seminar with excellent speakers on Sat morning with Q&A session
afterwards. So if learning about herpes, or keeping up with the
latest, is of interest to you, Indy has that. Most other events
focus strictly on the social aspects so if the seminar is not
important to you...there you go.
And Atlanta does the social
part very well with lots of choices of things to do and places to
go. Last year they had a tour of the CNN studio as well as other big
city attractions. You won't find something like that in Lapel,
Indiana LoL! On the other hand, you can't take over downtown Atlanta
with a "groupie" street party ;-)but that's what they can do at Indy
in Lapel.
So that's what I mean about
apples and oranges. It's really a matter of personal preference.
Best idea is to do both so you can make up your own mind. And since
Indy is first, and only 500 miles from Atlanta, I'd say just do it.
You'll meet people from all over the US as well as quite a few from
Atlanta. Then you'll see most of them again in Atlanta in August.
They're both worth checking out.
