My Letter to The View
In my own personal situation, I was a stay at home mom of twin boys. I
was a good wife and a good mother who unfortunately married a man with an
addiction to women. Through his antics I became "one of those people."
Never in a million years did I ever think I would be sitting on this side of
the STD wall.
My own vocal ability is NOT a reflection of the
majority, but a choice I made initially to ruin my ex's social life.
Fortunately over the years, I have taken my vocal ability and can now speak
only as an example of millions of my peers who can not because of fear!
Even as confident as I have grown in my own skin, I have faced rejection and
humiliation. I have also known three individuals who took their own
lives because they could not face another day of living with a sexually
transmitted disease.
The most common way genital herpes is being spread and/or contracted is
through oral sex. People with cold sores are passing the virus on simply
because they believe oral sex is safe sex, IT ISN'T!
Rather than take your position
and ability to reach a large number of people and using it to condemn, why not
take it to help the people who are trying to educate the world on the risks, preventions and treatments of herpes. YES there are ways in which an
infected person and a non-infected person can have a happy healthy
relationship without spreading the virus. My husband does not have
herpes, Why? Because I am educated and KNOW what to do to greatly reduce
his risk! But it involved honesty and communication! Not silence
such as what you encouraged.
I urge you to reconsider your previous comments for the good of a much larger
society and consider doing a show that would combat the stigma rather than
encourage it. People with herpes have faces, names, careers, they could
easily be your mother, father, son, daughter, sister, teacher, mentor or even
your own doctor. People with herpes do have hearts, we bleed and hurt
just like everyone else and your comments on the show I saw today were
hurtful, vicious and totally uncalled for.
I have taken the time to revise and re-revise this letter to make it as
non-flaming as possible, and have been steamed this entire day. Just be
thankful I am not oriental, overweight AND have herpes! Since you poked
fun at them too!
Regards,
Gayla Baer McCord
