International Herpes Week on hold

According to the International Herpes Alliance (IHA) website, “Due to funding issues, there are currently no plans to run an International Herpes Week Campaign during 2008.” Fingers crossed that the IHA secures funding to continue its campaign soon.

June 27th is National HIV Testing Day

Posted in Health Buzz | No Comments »

Coordinated by the National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA-US), this campaign helps reach millions of Americans at risk for HIV with the message that “It’s better to know.”

National HIV Testing Day - June 27

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 180,000 to 280,000 people nationwide are HIV-positive but are unaware of their status. HIV counseling and testing enables people with HIV to take steps to protect their own health and that of their partners, and helps people who test negative get the information they need to stay uninfected.

In observance of this day, there will be many community events that involve state and local organizations. The campaign’s outreach effort includes everyone, but especially targets high-risk populations such as African American and Latino communities; adolescents; young homosexual, bisexual, and transgendered men; women of childbearing age; and people who use contaminated needles to inject drugs.

To learn more, and to search for an HIV testing site in your area, you can visit the NAPWA site or the National HIV testing Day page. For more information on HIV, visit the ASHA website.

Women Urged to Talk to Healthcare Providers about Ways to Help Prevent Cervical Cancer

Posted in Health Buzz | No Comments »

One4One, a unique program focused on empowering women to help make a difference in the fight against cervical cancer, urges women to talk to their healthcare provider about ways they can help protect themselves from cervical cancer, while also raising money to increase cervical cancer information programs and other educational services, especially for those who may be at greater risk of developing the disease due to lack of access to information or healthcare.

Organizations participating in One4One include the American Social Health Association, Black Women’s Health Imperative, Lance Armstrong Foundation, Gynecologic Cancer Foundation, Native American Cancer Research, National Asian Women’s Health Organization, National Cervical Cancer Coalition, National Latina Health Network and Tamika & Friends, Inc., with support from Merck & Co., Inc.

For each woman who pledges to talk to her healthcare provider about cervical cancer via www.One4OnePledge.org between April 24 and June 5, Merck will donate $5, up to $1 million total, to the participating One4One organizations. The funds raised will be used to provide cervical cancer information programs and other educational services for women across the United States, including women at greater risk of developing the disease due to lack of access to information or healthcare.

In the U.S. alone, an average of 10 women die each day from cervical cancer, and it was estimated that more than 11,000 women would be diagnosed in 2007. “The loss of any life to cervical cancer is one too many, because it is a disease that we can help to prevent,” said Dr.Lisa Flowers, Assistant Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Division of Gynecologic Oncology, Emory University School of Medicine. “One4One is a great way to help strengthen the efforts of leading health organizations working to decrease the burden of cervical cancer in our country.”
