I also wanted to add that I don’t think it’s common for kids to pick up herpes from a day care center. Really, I think kids pick up herpes from aunts and uncles that have oral herpes (cold sores) that kiss the kids when they are having an outbreak. That’s really the most common way kids will contract it. Herpes Whitlow in a day care situation is not really the most likely scenario.

It can unfortunately be spread quite quickly through day care centers or anywhere that groups of children are in close proximity. Two little sisters at our daycare suffered horrible cold sores throughout December (ages 4 and 6) and while I felt so bad for them (and their mother!) I was so thankful when they cleared up and seemed to have not spread (either as HSV1 or herpes whitlow) to any other children.
