Also, if you are going to get vaccinated against N1H1 then you are better suited to get the shot. The nasal mist I hear is not as good.

Bob, the herpes antivirals, acyclovir, valtrex and famvir act by interfering with a single chemical reaction in herpes DNA inside your infected cells that is very specific to herpes virus replication. It doesn’t kill the virus. The inventor of this won a Nobel prize for it.

The pharmacist doesn’t understand the herpes antivirals. It should have no effect on H1N1, even a live virus vaccine.

Thanks for the comments Rajah. The CDC wouldn’t get back to me and GlaxoSmithKline simply deferred to my MD or Pharmacist probably for liability reasons. The pharmacist told me that since the H1N1 shot (which I received) contains a non-live culture that it wouldn’t be effected by any anti-viral drugs. On the other hand evidently the nasal spray contains a live culture which would have been killed quickly by the anti-viral medications.

Bob, Amoxycillin does nothing for shingles, so I hope it\’s Valtrex that you are taking.

No, the herpes antivirals will have no effect on your H1N1 vaccination. It\’s an entirely different virus and the herpes antivirals are very specific to the herpes family.

I am fighting an outbreak of shingles on my back and therefore have been taking a large amount of Amoxicillin and/or Valtrex for the last 10 days. I also got an H1N1 shot about a week ago. Will the antiviral medications that I’m on reduce the efficacy of the flu shot?

And yes it will be too late for almost everyone in North America because it seems like both our countries underestimated the demand for a vaccine. My point on my 360 was that I had changed my mind on the safety of the vaccine in that I now believe it is as safe as the seasonal flu vaccine.

Angela – I am so sorry to hear that but happy you are on the mend. Yes, 99% of the population will be fine from H1N1, just so scary about the 1% of perfectly healthy people that could not survive.

Here in Canada, we had a 13 year old boy that went to the hospital with a fever. He was sent home to rest and, after collapsing in his fathers arms after a bath, died later that night. It changed everything for us here in Canada.
