People that work in the dental field have to wear rubber gloves when they are working with their patients. I find it very hard to believe that you would be fired for having herpetic whitlow.

When I was finally diagnosed, the first thing the Dr. asked me was did I work in a dental office or hair salon.

I found out I had Herpetic Whitlow after I woke up one morning to my middle finger burning and throbbing.I was working for a Orhodontist at the time and by lunch the same day I could barely hold onto my instruments.I went to the DR. during lunch hour and he just looked at it and knew what it was.I started to cry and he looked at me and said “honey your a dental assistant this is common in the dental field.I went back to work and told the Dr.(my boss)what I had and she looked at me like she didn’t have any clue what I was talking about.Less than two weeks later I was layed off.I had worked for her for 5 years.I was employed there longer than anyone else.I feel very strongly I was let go because I contacted Herpetic Whitlow.I was honest in telling her what it was and I’m paying the price for it.I loved my job and losing it has caused me to be very depressed.

You just described my situstion perfectly. Always a fever then painful nodes and lo and behold a painful outbreak. Will it never end?

wow.. i have had HW on my thumb since 2001.. i have swollen lymph nodes in my under arm area.. i have tingling to painful feeling in my arm all the time.. if i get a fever or stressed the whitlow breaks out in a “cold sore” looking thing on my thumb.. i am always in some type of pain.. i take famvir or the generic form when i feel it really acting up… what a terrible disease..

So you guys think that the herpes virus has caused you nerve damage in your hands? I’m sorry to hear that. I’ve never heard of that before. What is your doctor doing to help you?

Thanks Shelia. After a series of painful test, they came to the conclusion that I did have muscle and nerve damage caused by the chronic virus and that it was irreversible. I know I can’t get rid of the virus, but I thought after this many years the outbreaks would stop.

Sheila – You can’t contract herpetic whitlow due to drinking after somebody that has herpes. Is your doctor helping you at all?

Gayla – You need to discuss this further with your doctor because a lot of what you are experiencing probably has nothing to do with the herpes virus. Also, once you contract herpes you keep it for life. Call your doctor!
