Will It Kill Me?
Posted on Friday, January 22nd, 2010 at 10:20 AMi am positive for type 1 and type 2. i only had one outbreak on around my lip about 3 years ago when i was 19 years old. at that time i was only positive for type 1 which i was told its just cold sores. now i just found out i have type 2 as well but never had an outbreak in the genitals thank god.. will it kill me? will i have health complications from this? will this affect me or not allow me to have kids at all?
When did your positive test result come into the picture? Were you recently tested via blood test OR did you have a sore cultured? What did your doctor tell you?
Yes, a history of cold sores and/or fever blisters indicates that you have oral herpes. That is what cold sores and fever blisters are ie: Herpes.
There are A LOT of people out there that have Herpes Type-2 and they don’t even know it because they’ve never been tested for it OR they have mistaken their symptoms for something else like yeast infection or jock itch.
Many people that go in for routine STD testing don’t even realize that Herpes is not always included in that routine testing. So when they come out of their appointment they are thinking they are free and clear when in reality they have only been tested for a few things like Gonorrhea and Chlamydia.
Having Herpes Simplex Virus is Not going to kill you. Being diagnosed with herpes is Not a death sentence either. Having Herpes doesn’t weaken your immune system. You can still have kids too. Life Goes On!

“Many people that go in for routine STD testing don’t even realize that Herpes is not always included in that routine testing.”
- So true. This is one of the downfalls of STD testing at free clinics and non-profits (and sometimes even your own physician). Imagine how many cases of all different types of STDS are falling through the cracks because people are not getting comprhensive testing.
Ben
No, herpes definitely won’t kill you and it’s not the end of the world, end of happiness, end of loving / being loved, end of sex, end of having children or anything of the sort.
I’ve had HSV1 as cold sores from childhood and have had genital HSV2 for 15 years. My life is good.
Rajah- do you take daily medication for it? do you have a lot of outbreaks around the genitals? the counselors from the place who did my test told me if i have seen an outbreak yet its likely that i may not. is this true?
Angela- When i tested three years ago for a full panle exam when i was about 19 years old, i was only positive for type 1 and negative for type 2. i had a bad cold or flu around decmeber and kept coughing till now so last week i did an std test to rule out hiv etc. this past week i found i had type 2. it was done through advanced testing center. its all done over the phone and they tell you where to go to for a local testing center lab and i call advance testing center a few days after once they get my results from the lab.. so i just found out i have type 2. i thought once you get type 1 its rare to get type 2. so i didnt go for reaon of symptoms it was just my idea to do a full panel test becuase i was sick for longer than a usual cold.. it was a blood test done through Herpes Simplex 1 & 2 IGG Antibody Test. is this test accurate? is there a chance it can be wrong since i haven had symptoms? is it worth retesting or its pretty accurate? and i was taking acid reflux medication and antibiotic for my cough at the time of the lab work. does that matter? sorry for all the questions.. im just freaking out.. i am rarely eating and sleeping since i found out.. am i over reacting? thank god i havent noticed symptoms. the counselor from advanced testing told me if i havent had outbreas yet than i likely may not see outbreaks.. is that true? i have thoughts of not even getting married anymore or having kids.. is that overreacting? the counselors told me if i havent seen anything yet than i may ot see any outbreas… and then online i read that it causes about 5 outbreaks a year?? i dont know who to belive or what to expect? i defintely dont want to be with any girls for a while.. can i resume with my life the way it was before i found out i was positive? some websites say herpes is more of nuicance than a medical problem.. is that true? i havent been doing my job correctly and my boss has been on me this past week about my performance… is this how i should be acting? is there any health complications from this? can i get married and have kids just like my parents and have a family? thanks so much.. sorry for the questions.. i just feel like my life just ended and thats all im thining about.. maybe im freaking out becuase i just found a few days ago.. thanks again
rajah- correction* the counselor told me if i HAVENT sen an outbreak yet its likely i wont
thanks
Hey Sam. First of all, it’ll be ok regardless. Second, would it help if you took off work for a day or two?
Third: Valtrex. I have no financial interest in this answer, LOL. Not cheap but if your insurance covers it you’ll manage. If not, vote for universal health care. There are a few seriously helpful drugs out there; Valtrex is one of them.
I picked up an oral case of hsv-2 12 years ago. Still kicking. It’s an annoyance, but if you already had hsv-1 it doesn’t seem all that different.
Sam – I think I will check out your questions and turn them into posts. Be sure and bookmark this blog so you can come back and see what I have to say to the questions that you’ve asked.
Dan – don’t forget that there is now a generic for Valtrex and even w/out health insurance or a good prescription plan, some of the other antivirals are quite affordable.
